These terms tend to be used interchangeably and do have similarities, but there are differences according to the ADA. Bleaching is designed to produce a whiteness that is beyond what would naturally occur while whitening restores teeth to a natural, unstained state.

Bleaching involves using a strong bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. When done properly in an office, the gums will be coated in a protective gel to prevent damage from the bleach.  It is effective and will produce maximum results in minimal time.

Whitening can be performed in-office or at home. In-office teeth whitening will use stronger whitening agents than an at-home version and will typically produce a more dramatic effect and last longer.

At-home kits, such as the ones you can buy in a drug store or supermarket, will include some kind of bleaching gel or strips with a gel coating. These over the counter style kits will have varying degrees of success but will not be as bright as an in-office treatment and the results will fade quickly.
